HD Voice

HD Voice

High-definition voice, or wideband voice, provides a level of improved clarity and better audio for VoIP communications. Traditional telephone calls have been constrained to a lower sound quality and limited to the 3.3 kHz spectrum, resulting in low-fidelity calls. With HD Voice the spectrum is more than doubled, providing a high-fidelity voice call. This improves the resolution of the voice dramatically, reducing the frequency of missed information the need for callers to repeat themselves.

With advancements in codecs, the actual bandwidth requirement for HD Voice can be less than half that of traditional telephony. For example: a HD Voice conversation using the G.722.1 codec only consumes 24 kbps of the network whereas a traditional PSTN call consumes 64 kbps of the network.

Bandwidth is often confused in a discussion of codecs and HD Voice. Audio bandwidth is the amount of fidelity; therefore, a higher bandwidth frequency provides a higher sound quality. Data or network bandwidth rates refer to how much network capacity is required to transmit the call across the network.

Codecs perform many tasks including enhancing voice quality with high-fidelity support and reducing network bandwidth resources by compressing voice packets. Below is a list of some of the typical voice codecs, along with their audio bandwidth and network bandwidth. In most cases, the bit rate needed to support wideband voice requirements is much less than the current 64 kbps.

Comparison of voice codecs
Hearing Frequency (kHz) Network bit rate (kbps) Voice codec
3.3 kHz (low-fidelity) 64kbps / 56kbps / 8kbps PCM / G.711 / G.729
7.0 kHz (high-fidelity) 10kbps / 24kbps / 64kbps G.722.2 / G.722.1 / G.722
20.0 kHz (high-fidelity+) 32kbps / 64kbps G.719 / AAC-LD

Broadvox supports on-net pass-through of HD Voice between a customer’s sites, allowing for HD Voice to work within the customer’s own Enterprise.
