Carrier CNAM Services

CNAM Description
The CNAM (Calling Name) service is an intelligent network service that displays a caller's name on a Caller ID device. The difference between CNAM and caller ID is that the caller's name displays along with, or instead of, the caller's phone number. Enhanced Caller ID delivers the name and the phone number of an incoming call to a Caller ID device.

CNAM Transport Flow
With CNAM, the intelligent network performs several functions during a call sequence. Upon receipt of a terminating call, the switch first establishes whether the Enhanced Caller ID has been enabled by the terminating subscriber. The switch also determines whether the call is marked "restricted" and/or if the calling party number is available.

Once the switch has performed all three functions, it sends a query to a signal transfer point (STP.) The STP performs a Global Title (GT) translation, which is the SS7 equivalent to IP routing. Then the switch establishes the appropriate service control point (SCP) and directs the query to that SCP. The SCP accesses the correct name information in its database.

Once the correct name has been identified, the SCP responds with the calling party's name, location (city and state) and/or an indicator of privacy.
